Extraordinary luxury hotels, cheap hostels, lovely boutique homes, private apartments… But there is probably only one place which feels like heaven!  We´ve decided to stay there – and spent our first night in in 9th arrondissement at Hotel de Nell. Just arrived, we immediately felt in love! With Paris and this comfort home.

Cosy home with a view

Hotel de Nell, designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, belongs to network of “Charm & More”. And you can take this name for granted – it is charming, cosy and light with a very warm and friendly atmosphere. The “more” is the five star luxury service, the high quality of the interior design, the Japanese bath… and the wonderful view over the city’s rooftops and the church St-Eugène-Ste-Cécile next to the hotel.

Small but “oh ho”

The entry hall of Hotel de Nell is quite small. But it´s still private, not busy. It underlines the overall warm and friendly atmosphere. The time when we were guests the in-house restaurant La Régalade Conservatoire was closed. Therefore, the breakfast was served in the bar lobby. It was delicious with an excellent service. A heavenly start into our first day in Paris!

A place like home – almost!

Hotel de Nell might not be the choice for everyone. It is a design accommodation for special occasions – just to enjoy pure luxury. If you want to wake up next to the angels of Eglise St-Eugène-Ste-Cécile this is your place to be. It simply feels like heaven in the heart of Paris.

Für ein Vier-Gang-Menü im hippen „Bones“ muss noch etwas mehr einplanen. Trotzdem war unser kulinarischer Ausflug in das angesagte Restaurant im 11. Arrondissement ein echter Erfolg und jeden Cent wert. Aber es ist nicht unser einziger Tipp für einen genussvollen Ausflug in Paris.

Vier Gänge, viele Fragen

Im “Bones” gibt es keine Karte, sondern ein festes Menü. Beim Hauptgang kann man zwischen zwei Optionen wählen. Alles andere muss man eben mögen! Das heißt, ein wenig Offenheit für neue Geschmäcker sollte man mitbringen. Zuweilen muss man sich auch einfach mal überraschen lassen – insbesondere wenn die Französisch-Kenntnisse so rudimentär sind, wie bei Henryk und mir. “Was ist ein Casseron?” “Foie heißt Leber, oder?” “Hmm, keine Ahnung, was arroche bedeutet”. Aber sei’s drum, wir waren bereit für alles… und dank englischer Übersetzung der ausgesprochen netten und hilfsbereiten Servicekräfte lernten wir schließlich auch, dass wir mit dem Amuse-Gueule soeben Lamm-Nierchen probiert hatten. Äh, okay… aber lecker!

Der Küchenchef und seine Crew brutzelte fleißig drauf los. Ein kulinarisches Highlight jagte das nächste! Nach weißem Thunfisch und Taschenkrebsfleich aus der Bretagne folgte als Zwischengang der bereits erwähnte Casseron (was sich übrigens als eine Art Tintenfisch herausstellte) an einer feinen Sauce aus Tinte und Tomate, bevor wir zum Hauptgang  “porc fermier” serviert bekamen. Das Schweinefleisch ähnelte ganz zartem Kassler und wurde durch perfekt zubereiteten Bauchspeck und leckere Polenta ergänzt. Zugegeben, nichts, was man auf der Karte auf Anhieb erraten oder normalerweise bestellt hätte – aber umso überraschender, dass ein so rustikal anmutendes Gericht dermaßen köstlich sein kann.

Bones – c’est bon

Henryk entschied sich zusätzlich noch für eine sehr gute Käseauswahl, bevor das Menü – und damit auch unser Abend im “Bones” – mit einem “Sorbet au Cassis” abgeschlossen wurde.
Das Menü kostet pro Person übrigens 55,- Euro, mit Käse-Gang sind es 63,- Euro, aber das ist es wert. Will man sich in Paris einen besonderen Abend gönnen (und legt keinen Wert auf vegetarische Kost), ist das Bones eine ausgezeichnete Wahl. Am Ende des Abends kugelt man dann glücklich und zufrieden nach Hause. Reservieren nicht vergessen!

Es muss nicht immer französisch sein

Paris ist multikulturell – das merkt man auch beim Essen. An unserem letzten Abend haben wir einen kleinen, feinen Asia-Laden gleich um die Ecke unseres Hotels entdeckt: Le Petit Cambodge. Spezialität: Bobuns. Eine Schale mit Reisnudeln, frischem Gemüse, Koriander, wahlweise Rindfleisch, Gambas oder vegetarisch. Dazu gibt es hausgemachten Zitronentee. Preislich ist der Laden absolut in Ordnung, jedes Gericht kostet um die zwölf Euro.

Vive la France

Last but not least – der Klassiker. Kein Besuch in Frankreich ohne Baguette. Man muss schließlich nicht immer auswärts Essen gehen. Manchmal ist ein Picknick auf dem Balkon oder am Kanal St. Martin mit etwas Käse und einer guten Flasche Wein absolut perfekt, um sich so richtig französisch zu fühlen. In diesem Sinne – bon appétit!

If your good friend – who lives in Paris – tells you not to come to Paris in August, he might be right! But we didn´t listen, booked our flights and ended up in a touristic hot spot! Surprise, surprise. Well, it´s Paris. It´s always lovely to be there – so, who cares about the others?

Standing in a row

From Sacré-Cœur to Notre Dame, we never walked alone. Spanish, Germans, Italians, US Americans – everywhere! But Paris would not be Paris if it isn´t still romantic to stand on the top of Montmatre, watching the sunset, to kiss each other underneath the Eiffel Tower or to drink a glass of wine along the canal of St. Martin in the evening. So delightful!

Sometimes it´s even helpful to stop if you see some people standing in a row. It was only the queue that helped us to find “Chez Marianne”, the most popular Falafel take-away in Paris. Yummy snack on the go

There are always two sides of the city

Luckily, Paris is more than just touristic sights. Thanks to Marianna from Weltenbummlermag who advised us a really nice walk around the 20th arrondissement. We followed her route and found some hidden places and (almost) secrets spots which gave us an impression of the real Paris. Whenever you are in that arrondissement: Never miss a stop at Père Lachaise, the famous cemetery and last resting-place of Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde and many more.

The easiest way to explore Paris is by bike. Take a velib and go for a 30 minutes free ride along the Seine. The new designed waterfront offers art installations, family activities, ping-pong and an urban gardening project on the water. Plenty of space for everyone…

From Paris to Tokyo

If you want to avoid the queue in front of the Louvre there are great alternatives like the modern art exhibitions of Palais de Tokyo. We spent almost the whole day there and were impressed by the huge wooden sculpture in the little palais and the amazing rock by Eduardo Basualdo. There are also several really good video installations and an interesting exposition by Hiroshi Sugimoto – and, and, and…

Paris, je t’aime

August, Sptember, October… Paris is always worth a visit. It was my third time in that city and each time it was different, new, inspiring,… “Dominique, we´ve just decided to visit you in Paris, soon!”
